The Real Oggi
The Real Oggi: “I feel like Oggi handed me my life back.”

Kathy T. is an energetic, friendly, tell-it-like-it-is finance pro with an impressive resume that includes 18 years of financial experience in roles that range from Accounting Manager to Controller to CFO. She’s got the know-how to perform any task, and the passion and integrity to get results. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say she’s a diamond in the rough.

During her career Kathy has worked with several Twin Cities recruiting firms as a client and as a candidate during a job search of her own. Needless to say, she has a unique perspective about the industry. Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Kathy to chat about her experiences with Oggi and other firms in town.

Oggi: Can you tell me a little bit about your perception of local staffing/recruiting firms?

Kathy: It was terrible, horrible. In my experiences as a client I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a recruiter hype up candidates that ultimately didn’t meet the mark in roles that range from receptionist to project manager to controllers and everything in between. It was just wreckage after wreckage. They just couldn’t do the job(s).

Throughout the project(s) I had provided the firm with feedback about their consultant(s) and later learned that they had continued to send them out to their other clients. I would say that communication is one of my top strengths, so I don’t believe that anything got lost in translation. It really made me wonder…had they gotten the same feedback before but still sent me the consultant for my project? Trust became a real issue.

Based on those experiences I can say honestly I was mostly against using agencies, even when I really needed the help. That is, until I met Sean. Now I tell everyone – talk to Oggi! Oggi is the only firm I’ll work with.

Oggi: What about your experiences when you were looking for a new opportunity? How was that a different experience?

Kathy: The first time I utilized a recruiting firm to help me find a role I was going through a major transitional period in my life and the company I had worked for, for 5+ years had found itself in some trouble and I found myself out of a job. I was heartbroken and I felt my whole world was collapsing around me. I took some time off to regroup and a few months later I started my job search. Since I had previously established relationships with a few recruiters (as a client) I reached out to them first. Initially they were excited to hear from me and seemed ready to help me find my next opportunity but then days and weeks would go by, I’d follow up with them about my search and I’d hear nothing. Here I was, on the other side of the fence, and they wouldn’t return my calls. It’s funny because after I found a role, they would call me about open positions in my department that they “had the perfect candidate for” and when I called them out for their lack of response during my search well…they didn’t have a whole lot to say. They seemed to just brush it off. As if my experiences with them as a candidate didn’t translate now that I was a client again.

Oggi: Wow. So how did you meet Sean?

Kathy: It was during that same search/transitional period. I reached out to Oggi and immediately it was a different vibe. I first met with Sean and he really took the time to understand my situation – both personal and professional. He gave me very honest and sometimes brutal advice. But it was exactly what I needed at the time.

Oggi: So did he find your next role?

Kathy: Well, I made the decision to make a career move which, in full disclosure, he advised me not to take. Nevertheless I made the leap. This move would have soured many of the relationships I’ve had with other recruiters in the past but not Sean.

One of my favorite sayings is a quote from Samuel Johnson (English writer and poet).

“The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.”

That’s exactly what I found in Sean. He & I have stayed in touch throughout the years and he has treated me the same no matter what hat I’ve been wearing – from a candidate, Accounting Manager to Controller to CFO. It hasn’t mattered, he’s kept in touch and treated me the same even though I wasn’t actively searching for a role myself and didn’t have any business to offer him.

Oggi: You start your new role next week. Are you excited?

Kathy: I’ve felt a little lost for two years but right now I am feeling very thankful. I am overwhelmed with the perfect match and I feel like Oggi handed me my life back.
