Advice For Job Seekers
Tips to Improve Work-Life Balance

In order to survive in today’s world, work is an expected norm within society; you get a job and pay the bills. It’s no surprise. But your career doesn’t have to suck the life out of your social life. Work shouldn’t just simply be a way of making you money, it should be able to support you financially and emotionally. Maintaining an ideal work-life balance may not always be easy, but with the help of time management and organizing priorities, you can improve your overall wellbeing. Here are 6 tips on how to better your work-life balance.

1. Understand There is No Such Thing as a ‘Perfect’ Balance

First off, you need to know that there isn’t a ‘perfect’ work-life balance, but you can strive for a realistic one. Everyday will be different and it is important to constantly consider your goals and priorities. Some days you may have to focus more on work, and others you may have more time for your personal hobbies and loved ones. It’s important to remain open in order to find a healthy balance.

2. Identify What’s Important to You

Instead of trying to do it all, focus on what you value most and don’t be afraid to make choices about what you want from your life. You want to perfect everything at work but that can get overwhelming and take the energy right out of you. Communicating clearly about what is working and what isn’t, is a major key to stay physically, mentally and emotionally healthy. Work is very important but so is your personal life.

3. Make Time for Exercise and Prioritize your Health

Your overall health is a main concern for balancing your work-life schedule. This will help you be a better employee and a happier and more productive person. Sit down and determine the kinds of workout goals you want time for whether that be morning runs, lunch hour walks or any after work forms of exercise that get your mind off the busy work week. Scheduling these workouts then make it achievable to get done.

4. Remember to Unplug

We get so caught up with all of our technology, making it hard to focus on what needs to be done. If you’re at work, turn off any distractions such as too much music, background conversation and possibly your cell phone. Whatever the distraction may be, turning it off may help put your whole focus into your work. This also applies to afterwork hours. We live in a connected world that never sleeps which can add on to weekly stress. Sometimes this may mean unplug and take a vacation by shutting off the phone for awhile. A vacation could even mean leaving your phone at home and going for a 20 minute walk with family or friends.

5. Make Sure you Enjoy your Job

If you dread and hate your job, you will not be able to find happiness. It’s plain and simple. Obviously there are times you won’t love every aspect of your job, but it needs to be exciting enough in order to get you there every morning and make sure it is your right fit. Choose a job that you are passionate about, it will change your attitude about life and get you to enjoy your week more. If you are currently working in a toxic environment that is mentally and emotionally draining you, it is time to search for a new job.

6. Enjoy your Weekends and Build Downtime in your Schedule

If your weekdays and weekends blur together, that is a sign your health will never be able to rest! Not all jobs will allow you to avoid every possible work-related event, but make sure you allow yourself to relax when you can. Limit to checking your emails during your free time.

Success is being able to enjoy a life where you create goals that better your health, career and relationships. Make sure you are remembering to find that time for your hobbies, interests, family and friends. You don’t want to be spending over 8 hours a day working so hard to come home defeated and neglect the things that are important to you outside of your work life.
