The summer days are slowly coming to an end, which means it’s time to get serious about  looking for work now that the kids are heading back to school! Here are 5 ways to best utilize your time during your job search:

1.Know your Goals and Destination.
Before you begin the job search process, you need to establish your goals, and determine if they’re realistic. Then, determine the correct steps to get there. If you don’t come up with specific goals, you won’t get anywhere. Start by writing down not only your career goals, but also the way you want to live your life. This will help determine where you want to be, what your core values and beliefs are, and other personal preferences.

2. Make Sure You’re Organized.
Now that the kids are busy with school, it’s time for you to get organized with everything you need to get back to work. Keep a folder with all the proper job search necessities such as resumes, cover letters, work samples, references, and your portfolio if you have one. This is also important when it comes to your online presence. Get active on LinkedIn! Engage with people on your feed, make connections with professionals in positions similar to your dream job, and post relevant content to attract users to your profile. A messy workplace and online image reflects an unprofessional applicant.

3. Set a Schedule.
Whether you’re currently fully-employed, part-time, or unemployed, it helps to prioritize your job search tasks. Some of these tasks could include making phone calls, reaching out to connections, sending emails, browsing job listings, job shadowing, and going to interviews. If you’re currently employed, you’ll have to make the extra time to get these tasks done during lunch breaks, weekends, or during other times around your work hours.

4. Selectively Apply.
One mistake many people do when looking for a job is applying to any and every job that is somewhat related to your position. Not only is this ineffective, but it takes more time away from effective ways of finding a job like networking and customizing your search. Make sure you’re applying for jobs you’re actually qualified for and have a general interest in. This way you can customize your resume and cover letter to match each position.

5. Network, Network, Network!
In today’s world, most jobs are found through the people you know. “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” You should be spending your time meeting people and making connections. By attending company functions, parties, or networking events, you’ll be able to make strong professional connections. Set up informational interviews or take tours of companies that spark your interest. Lastly, remember to regularly check social media, especially LinkedIn.
